Home MenuSanitary Sewer Main Lining Project
Project Overview:
About the Project
The City of Falcon Heights' Capital Improvement Plan includes annual funding for a sanitary sewer main lining program to extend the life of our sanitary sewers by 50 years or more. A majority of the sewer mains in the City were installed over 40 years ago. The material that was used was clay pipe. Over the years, cracks have developed in the pipe due to tree roots and ground water.
Trenchless technology
The conventional method of digging and replacing the pipe (“open-cut replacement”) is very expensive, and disruptive to property owners. This technology, called cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) renewal, installs a new liner pipe inside the old clay tile sewer main without digging up city streets, which results in minimal disruption to residents during construction. The Contractor can effectively repair sewer lines up to 300 feet or more and have residents back in service the same day.
The liner pipe is inserted into the main through existing manholes, inflated and cured in place with a heat or steam process. Any given segment is usually completed in one working day. Service line connections to homes and businesses are reopened using a robotic cutter and remote cameras. During the process, existing flows are bypassed using pumps.
This technology has been proven over the past 20 years, and has become more cost-effective than open cut replacement.
Jetting and Cleaning
Before any actual lining work is done, the sewer line is jetted and cleaned with a high pressure water hose. Grease and accumulated buildup is removed, and any tree roots intruding into the sewer line are cut and eliminated.
Safety
We remind you to use caution around the work site. Your assistance in reminding area children to stay clear of construction equipment is helpful in maintaining a safe environment. Your patience and cooperation during this construction is appreciated.
Communications
If you are included in this project, you will receive a letter this spring, prior to the start of the project. Sewer lines included are:
- Larpenteur Ave (Prior St. to Pascal St.)
- Snelling Ave (Ruggles St. to Roselawn Ave.)
Our contractor will give notice to affected residents at least 24 hours before their work.
