About the Commissions
The City of Falcon Heights has four City Commissions, which serve the City Council in an advisory capacity. Each commission may consist of up to seven (7) members, including one optional Youth Commissioner (excluding the Planning Commission), who have been appointed by the City Council, as well a City Council Liaison and a Staff Liaison.
- Planning Commission reviews planning concerns including P.U.D.s (Planned Unit Developments), C.U.P.s (Conditional Use Permits), general zoning concerns, and other planning-related considerations. The Planning Commission meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
- Parks and Recreation Commission makes recommendations to the City Council regarding parks planning, parks programming, special events and other parks-related concerns. In recent history, the Parks Commission has provided parks planning through community outreach, was instrumental in the grant funding of a new playground at Curtiss Field, and hosts special events throughout the year. The Parks Commission meets on the first Monday of the month.
- Environment Commission explores opportunities for the City of Falcon Heights to promote sustainable practices through a variety of methods. Recently, they were awarded grant funding for bicycle fix-it stations in the city to promote bicycling, have explored ways to reduce waste/increase recycling in the city, and opportunities to increase the use of solar energy. The Environment Commission meets on the second Monday of the month.
- Community Engagement Commission continues to promote opportunities for residents to be involved by promoting and facilitating Neighborhood Block Parties, hosting an annual event on Human Rights Day, and works to create an ongoing knowledge of residents’ desires related to community issues and needs. The C.E.C. meets on the third Monday of the month.
Term
Regular Commissioners serve three-year terms, with up to one reappointment allowed consecutively. Upon completion of service on one commission, commissioners are eligible for appointment to another commission, or after a period of at least one year, for appointment to the same commission on which they termed out of (at least) one year prior.
Youth Commissioners serve one-year terms and may be reappointed up to two times.
Terms begin on the date of appointment by the City Council, not a fixed annual schedule.
